2020 - A Year To Remember
'Twas The Night Before Christmas
"Twas the night before Christmas and throughout the world
Very little was moving 'cause life was on hold
For this year alone we all witnessed you see
A global pandemic for which was no key
The year started well with a new team in place
That will manage our exit from Europe with grace
But with 12 months to go was it ever enough
We all surely knew that this road would be tough
But it didn't take long, we were caught in a spell
Came Covid 19 like a bat out of hell
Over oceans and lands it spread it's vast wings
And no one foresaw the chaos it brings
So government lockdowns, infrequent and rare
Were all put in place and we thought it not fair
Stay at home, wash your hands or at least wear a mask
Surely it couldn't be too much to ask
So we stand here on earth and look up to the skies
So little pollution and we now see with fresh eyes
And earth that we once took for granted and ours
Needs cared for and tended and not left with our scars
Some hero's will come and some hero's will go
But this year there are new hero's on show
As they manned the front line and kept us alive
Diverse as they are they all helped us survive
There are doctors and nurses who held the front line
Shopkeepers and truckers their efforts divine
So let's not forget the time that they spent
They kept the wheels turning, all heaven sent
And the world that we know, so greedy and mean
Comes together for once as we need a vaccine
To help and protect and to keep us from ill
We need all the chemists, their knowledge and skill
So that brings me back to this Christmas Eve
And gives me some courage 'cause I truly believe
That despite all the years and despite all the doubt
That white bearded man will be out and about
So as darkness falls and the house grows so still
We can sit, feel helpless, feel the cold and the chill
But let's sit in the quiet and let's open our mind
And think of the world and all of mankind
'Cause it's not just us who have had all this pain
The whole of the world has been under such strain
So let us live on with great hope in our heart
That when morning comes we'll have gifts to impart
And then let us think that it's not just for one day
And along with those reindeers pulling that sleigh
As Nicholas smiles and stops at each home tonight
He will leave us all something to help in this fight
If we want to survive and be happy and free
Then we need to take care of each other you see
And now as I draw all these thoughts to a close
I see there's a deal just announced, but who knows
As the talks and the arguments come to an end
That GB and Europe will once more be friends
So maybe it's true, could he really exist
The tosses, the turns and all the wee twists
So now I will stop and I'll take a slight pause
"Cause it's his night you see, Thanks Santa Claus
